Duke’s historic recruiting run continued today when R.J. Barrett, the nation’s No. 1 rated player in the class of 2018, offered his commitment to Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils.

The announcement comes just two days into the early signing period.

Barrett’s official visit to Durham helped push the Blue Devils past the senior’s other widely perceived favorites, Kentucky and Oregon. A major selling point is the opportunity to join recent signees Cam Reddish and Tre Jones to create one of the most explosive backcourts in the country.

“Ever since his official visit, our sources have beamed with confidence,” Devils Illustrated recruiting analyst Clint Jackson said. “The 6-foot-7 wing was very receptive to Duke's plan and they marketed to his hot buttons extremely well. The vision is Cameron Reddish on one wing and Barrett on the other. Having Tre Jones running the show helps, too, because any dynamic wing like Barrett loves playing with a quarterback who looks to dish like Jones does.”

Jackson’s take on the newly formed trio, particularly the combination of Barrett and Reddish, has him searching to find a former Duke wing duo to match their talent and skill-set.

In fact, he has yet to find find one.

“In all of my years of covering Duke basketball recruits, I am struggling to think of a better one-two punch in scoring wings in the same class as Reddish and Barrett.”

The Montverde Academy five-star guard is known for his elite versatility and athleticism, while also being noted for an unmatched ability to score. The Canadian gives Duke yet another one-and-done talent, and places Duke at the top of the 2018 recruiting rankings.

“Duke gets an uber-elite, one and done wing who can really handle the ball and score,” Jackson added. “He's virtually unstoppable in any type of one-on-one setting where he can isolate. He shoots it pretty well and is a tough, explosive athlete. A future pro that makes the game look easy.”
