Kentucky athlete sees positives in Duke

Louisville (Kentucky) Waggener defensive back Jairus Brents counts Duke among his group of early offers, a list that also includes Boston College, Duke, Indiana, and Kentucky.

The Blue Devils were the most recent to extend its offer to the 5-foot-10, 179-pounder, and Brent told DevilsIllustrated.com that he has kept in contact with the Duke staff.

“We’ve been communicating through Twitter. I haven’t taken a trip down or anything,” Brents said.

One of Brents’ teammates is currently committed to Louisville, but still had nice things to say about the Duke program to Brents. That has seemed to leave an impression.

Tahj Rice was really interested in Duke and I’ve been talking to him about it for a while,” Brents said. “I was hoping to one day get a scholarship from them. That’s why I was real appreciative that they offered me.”

While Brents admitted he has a lot more to learn about the football side of things and may do so on a future visits, he is well aware of Duke’s strong academic reputation.

“I mean, they’re a great academic school,” he said. “They seem like they would keep me on track. They want me to come down for homecoming.”

Listed as a cornerback by Rivals.com, Brents is also capable of playing defense. He appears to be an “athlete” on Duke’s board.

“They’re not really for sure what position they want me at right now, offense or defense. They just want me to get down there,” Brents explained.

There is no current favorite for the Kentucky product, who could render a decision sometime between the conclusion of his junior football season to next summer.

“I don’t really have a top school as of now. I’m just looking at what’s the best fit for me and where I can get on the field the fastest.”
