Duke taking a personable approach with Ricky Person

Franklinton (North Carolina) 2018 athlete Ricky Person is already drawing substantial recruiting buzz despite his status as a high school sophomore.

Three in-state programs – Charlotte, Duke, and NC State – have already offered with another pair potentially set to join.

“Wake Forest and North Carolina said that they’re about to offer, but they haven’t right now,” Person told DevilsIllustrated.com. “They’re going to let me know soon.”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder recapped picking up his offer from Duke, a scholarship that clearly made a positive impression on him.

“It was right before football practice. I remember like it was yesterday. The coach called my coach and I talked to him. He told me he was going to offer me. I felt good about it and still do. That’s a good academic school,” he said.

With his size and skill set, Person is capable of playing multiple positions at the college level but believes he may ultimately settle in at one specific spot on offense. The Blue Devil staff thinks he is versatile enough to set up on either side of the ball.

“Duke told me I can play anywhere on the field,” he said. “They’re looking to play me at running back, slot, and if I want to play defense then defense. With my height, if I keep growing I think I might want to play wide receiver.”

Once the spring hits, Person is looking at taking a few visits to see some other ACC programs.

“I know for junior day I’m supposed to be going to Virginia Tech and NC State. I’m supposed to be visiting Clemson over the summer. I really want to look into Clemson to see what their program is about.”

It’s too early for Person to be able to narrow his focus, but a couple programs hold an edge at this point.

“Not really because I haven’t given it much thought,” he said of one leader. “With my academics, I like NC State and Duke right now. They’re my top two.”
