FL WR wrapping up visits with tour of Ole Miss
Neal McCready
RebelGrove.com Conner Vernon's final recruiting swing is close to an end, but the three-star wide receiver from Miami (Gulliver Prep), Fla., isn't giving any real hints about his college destination.
Vernon, a 6-foot-1, 179-pounder, spent time last week at Duke and Wake Forest before camping at Auburn on Saturday. Vernon, who spent Sunday with family in Birmingham, Ala., will visit Troy today before making the trip west to Ole Miss on Tuesday.
Duke, Wake Forest, Troy and Ole Miss have offered scholarships.
"My visit over to Durham (N.C.) was really fun and I loved the campus which was pretty big," Vernon said. "The Wake Forest trip was also outstanding. I spoke with head coach Jim Grobe and the rest of the coaching staff about how I fit in and their offense."
The Auburn camp experience, Vernon said, "went real well. I did well at camp and they said they'd get in contact with me in the next 48 hours. I'll find out Monday what they propose to do about an offer."
Then there's Ole Miss, a school that Vernon has heard plenty about, whether from family members or from former Gulliver Prep staffer Jorge Baez, who is now an administrative intern on Houston Nutt's staff.
"I talk to the coaches a little bit," Vernon said. "My cousin was there (on a visit) and he loved it and said it was a good place. They've got great coaches over there. I'm looking forward to see it.
"(Baez) said he loves it. He said it's a great place. I've also talked to Coach (Chris) Vaughn and Coach (Ron) Dickerson. I'm looking forward to meeting them in person. Coach Baez said it's a good place with a lot to do and he said I could come look at it."
Vernon will be taking close looks at Troy and Ole Miss over the next 48 hours, as he's given himself a deadline to make a decision and announce his school of choice.
"I'm to the point where I want to pull the trigger by August 1," Vernon said. "I want it done before the season starts, so as soon as I'm done with these recruiting visits, I'm going to pull the trigger on a place. Unless something changes between now and August 1 from an offer standpoint, I think this is it."
