Three-star WR preps for big road trip

Three-star wide receiver Conner Vernon has a plan to make his college decision before the start of the 2008 football season. With four offers already in hand and the chance to earn a fifth in the near future, that decision is beginning to get more clarity. But this week, Vernon will be taking a trip that will play a major role in where he ends up in 2009.

"Tuesday I've got a big trip for the summer," said the Miami (Fla.) Gulliver prep standout. "I'm goin from Tuesday to Tuesday. I'll be going to Auburn, Wake Forest, Ole Miss and Troy. I've already seen Duke and those are the four schools that have offered me so I'll make my decision sometime after the trip."

Of the four schools he will be visiting, Auburn is the only one that has yet to extend an offer but Vernon will have an opportunity to change that when he camps with the Tigers, the only camp he will be attending on the trip.

"There's a good chance they'll offer," he said. "I talked to Coach Gran and he said that he was at our Spring Practice and he said that he really wanted me to come to camp. I've got a bunch of family that went to Auburn so I definitely wouldn't mind carrying on the legacy."

The trip this week will allow Vernon the opportunity to compare each school with the other and put him in a good position to make an informed college decision afterwards. To this point, his one trip has been to Duke so the Blue Devils have set the standard.

"Duke was great," he said. "I loved everything about Duke so I'm just going to base these trips off of them just to see where I feel the most comfortable. I'm going to look at the same stuff at every school, the facilities and things like that but really I'll be looking for just where it feels right."

The main focus of this trip is to help Vernon make his college decision before the fall, a goal that he has had his mind set on for a while.

"I definitely want to be committed somewhere before the season starts so that I can 100 percent focus on the team and not have any distractions," he said. "We're definitely looking forward to the season. The sky's the limit for this team. I think it's going to be one of our fastest teams yet, so hopefully we can pull through."
