Duke's defense steps up

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke basketball completed its exhibition schedule Thursday evening with a 69-45 victory over Division II Winston-Salem State University. The Blue Devils, who struggled quite a bit on offense, came out on top behind solid defense, which was a point of emphasis for the team coming in.

The Devils, who gave up 87 points to Western Washington in their first exhibition, worked hard since Saturday's contest to improve on the defensive end of the floor.

Some of the areas of focus included locking down penetration and showing more aggressiveness on the ball. To a man, that was deemed a success. Duke held WSSU to just 29.3 percent shooting from the field, including just 2-of-11 from beyond the 3-point line.
